Brutalism: Why we want you to Break the Rules

This week I wanted to let you guys in on an awesome design style called Brutalism. I bet you’ve seen it around, even used certain elements of it in your own designs. Take a peek at some of the examples below.

Brutalism sounds a bit strange – along the lines a fetish; something sinister, really but I promise it is nothing of the sort. It’s simply design with a killer attitude! Though, not for everyone, this form of design surely shakes this up and grabs the attention of your followers.

This styles’ name is derived from a raw, concrete-heavy architectural movement brought about in the ’50s, but in terms of modern design just think of it as a rebel against these rules:

  1. Cohesive palettes
  2. Spacing symmetry
  3. Sense of depth
  4. Readable text

What’s so insanely FUN about this form of design is that with Brutalism, colors can clash, elements can crowd, overlap and look flat and stark. Another key feature to Brutalism, you’ll notice, is that it is very big on analog-style, monospaced text. Its design speaks more “anti-design” in tone and is popular amongst:

  • Urban fashion brands
  • Design, art, and tech companies
  • Musicians (art and event posters)

When it comes to Brutalism in web design, however, not everyone is on the same page. Brutalism in graphic design is chaotic – so imagine as a UI or UX designer taking this form of design and implementing just that, chaos. Read this interesting article about “The Ugly” web design trend here.
