Blogging has really erupted onto the scene over the past decade. Originally started out as a glorified online journal and now evolved into a blogosphere of industrialized knowledge-based distinctions covers topics from fashion to tech; food to livestock keeping and even stranger habits such as the Tom Selleck Waterfall Sandwich. Oh, it’s real I tell you. It’s real. Tom Selleck, I’m sorry this happened to you. Sandwiches, I apologize as well. This blog depicts art that always depicts a waterfall feature, actor Tom Selleck and a sandwich all nicely Photoshopped together. Why you ask? Beats me. That’s the world we live in.

You name it. We blog about it. However, with everything great (minus the Selleck Waterfall Sandwich scenario) comes a formula and to crack ever so gracefully into the blogosphere and make a dent, one must put all of these elements below into a beaker (responsibly of course) shake lightly and pour out for success. Written below is a Blogger’s Formula. When utilized properly, successful blogs can be achieved. (Unless your writing is bad. Terribly bad. We did not account for poor writing in the formula).


  1. Logo
  2. Functional, Easily Accessible Navigation Bar
  3. Visible Search Bar
  4. Easy to Read Typography (if you go comic sans on me, I will publicly shame you and you will have to let me).
  5. Responsive Web Design (this is 2018 – if it’s not prebuilt into your template get yourself a designer).
  6. Most Popular Posts Feed
  7. Related Posts Feed
  8. Tags
  9. Categories
  10. Comment Area/Box
  11. About Page (Make it stellar. People want to know why they should be reading your post and if you write nothing astonishing about yourself, they probably won’t give two cents about what you have to say). This reminds me, I should probably embellish my “About Me” page a touch.)
  12. Privacy Page (necessary for a lot of other elements, especially if you plan to run ads on your blog).
  13. Terms and Conditions Page (goes hand in hand with the Privacy jargon).
  14. Contact Information
  15. Social Sharing Buttons
  16. Social Feed Widgets (Pop in a live Instagram Feed or Facebook Widget in a Footer or sidebar).
  17. Services and/or Product Page (if you offer such).
  18. Newsletter opt-in form
  19. Sitemap
  20. Google Analytics Plugin (hint: Works if you have a Google Analytics account)
  21. SEO Tools and Plugin (recommendation—YoastSEO).

If you’re overthinking every post, burning out on “aesthetic,” or throwing up another “Hey guys, here’s what I did today, check out the line at Starbucks” just to stay consistent—breathe. That’s not the move.

Your content isn’t supposed to feel like a press release.
You’re not a brand (well, I mean, in a way — but let’s not get into logistics here!) You’re a person with a voice. A vibe. A message. You’re selling yourself before anything else. People need to connect  with you before they are going to connect with anything you are ever going to sell them. 

The posts that actually connect?
They’re not the perfectly polished ones. They’re the ones where you show up like a real human.
Where you talk like yourself.
Where you stop trying to please the algorithm and just say something that matters. (Take that, algorithm! 💪) 

This is your reminder (and permission slip) to stop creating out of pressure and start posting with purpose.
Show your face. Tell the truth. Connect like you mean it. If you don’t want to show your face, I don’t care! Post something that matters to you and write about it in your caption. It’s okay to stay behind the scenes. 

Because at the end of the day, social media is just that—social. And people follow people, not perfectly filtered fluff.

9️⃣ Your niche if your messaging is still unclear.
🔟 Likes. Let’s talk about leads instead.

1️⃣3️⃣ Posting at “optimal times” if your content isn’t actually good.

1️⃣5️⃣ Subscribing to Meta for the Blue Badge. It’s a touchy subject to some, but the investment doesn’t seem worthwhile for a checkmark.

3️⃣ Multi-platform skills – IG is cute, but what about PR? Email? Web? The best marketing isn’t one-dimensional—it’s a whole ecosystem.
